The Art of Stillness: Adventures in Going Nowhere by Pico Iyer
Pico Iyer has spent his life travleing the world - from Easter Island to Ethiopia, Cuba to Kathmandu - and writing about his travels.  In this book, he conterintuitively makes a case for the pleasures of stillness.
Drawing on the lives of Leonard Cohen and Mahatma Gandhi, Marcel Proust and Emily Dickinson, Iyer reveals how stillness can quicken creativity, and opens up a way of living that counters the mad rush of our modern lives.
In a world beset by the distractions and demands of technology, Iyer reflects on why so many of us seem desperate to unplug.  "It's as if almost all of us now feel like emergency-room physicians, perpetually on call and obliged to heal ourselves but unable to find our prescriptions amid all the data on our desk."  The tonic, Iyer suggests, is the age-old practice of slowing down, taking stock, and discovering the simple, cathartic thrill of stillness.
